The Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) welcomes Derrick Mitchell, MHA, PMP, in the new role of the Director of Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity (DIHE). Mitchell will lead the execution and implementation of the SGO and Foundation for Women’s Cancer (FWC) strategic DIHE initiatives. DIHE are key pillars and core values in both the SGO’s 2021-2023 strategic plan, as well as the FWC’s strategic plan.

Mitchell will also serve as the lead staff liaison to the DIHE Committee and related subcommittees and task forces in pursuit of the following goals:

  • To foster greater diversity, equity, inclusion and accountability within the society and larger healthcare community to improve health outcomes for all patients
  • To attract, diversify and develop future generations of health care professionals and stakeholders who treat and care for gynecologic cancer patients.
  • To increase diversity within membership, volunteer leadership roles and staff.
  • To identify and support research and education aimed at improving health outcomes for diverse patient populations.

Prior to joining SGO, Mitchell worked for the American Hospital Association at the Institute for Diversity and Health Equity where he obtained a Certificate in Diversity Management in Health Care. His recent work experience spans across development of operational strategies, successfully implementing roll out of programs and processes, and creating positive impactful deliverables through management of diversity career center and health equity annual conferences. In addition, Mitchell is certified by the Project Management Institute as both a Project Management Professional and Agile Certified Practitioner.

Mitchell is also a veteran Combat Medic 91B of the Army National Guard, which included assisting on medical emergency evacuations during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Mitchell obtained his bachelor’s degree in Biology from Grinnell College, a master’s degree in Health Services Administration from National-Louis University and is currently obtaining a doctorate in Healthcare Administration from the Medical University of South Carolina.

SGO is thrilled to have this new addition to our society as we strive to enhance DIHE goals related to internal operations and programming that best serves our members.
