SGO Statement on Humanitarian Crisis in Ukraine

News Article
Mar 11, 2022

The Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) joins the global community in expressing our profound sorrow and collective horror at the Russian invasion of Ukraine which has created a humanitarian crisis with a ripple effect across the European continent. SGO represents health care practitioners in 51 nations around the world, including 13 countries in Western and Central Europe. We stand in solidarity with health care practitioners and their patients of all nationalities who are navigating this crisis.

The challenges of treating oncology patients during the COVID-19 pandemic have now been compounded by practicing and providing medicine in a war zone. The ongoing refugee crisis means that oncology patients residing in Ukraine will now have their treatments disrupted as they flee more immediate danger in the conflict zones. SGO applauds those who are welcoming refugees into their home countries as well as those organizations working to coordinate responses to manage cancer care needs among refugees.

SGO stands with all of our members who are feeling the impact of the humanitarian crisis spreading across Europe, as a society committed to the preservation of life, we add our voices to those who see the value in our shared humanity.
