Carol Brown, MD, FACOG, FACS

SGO is proud to congratulate Past President Carol Brown, MD, FACOG, FACS, on her appointment to the President’s Cancer Panel by President Joe Biden, as part of the Cancer Moonshot Initiative.

Dr. Brown currently serves as Senior Vice President & Chief Health Equity Officer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and has been a driving force in improving and advocating for health equity in cancer treatment.

The Cancer Moonshot Initiative was developed by President Biden in 2016, during his term as Vice President, with a mission to “accelerate the rate of progress against cancer.” (WhiteHouse.gov) President Biden reignited this initiative in February 2022.

The Cancer Cabinet, comprising First Lady Jill Biden and members of the United States Cabinet and Biden-Harris Administration identified five priorities for the initiative:

  1. Close the screening gap
  1. Understand and address environmental exposure
  1. Decrease the impact of preventable cancers
  1. Bring cutting edge research through the pipeline to patients and communities
  1. Support patients and caregivers

The President’s Cancer Panel will serve as direct advisors to the President, and “advise him on barriers to and opportunities for progress in reducing the burden of cancer,” (WhiteHouse.gov) in pursuit of these identified priorities and the goal of reducing the death rate of cancer by 50% in 25 years.
