In recognition of next year’s theme for the SGO Annual Meeting on Women’s Cancer—The Power of Shared Purpose—the Society of Gynecologic Oncology is pleased to announce the first SGO Member of the Month: Emma Barber, MD, Assistant Professor of Gynecologic Oncology at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL.
Dr. Barber was nominated by Connor Wang, MD, for demonstrating excellence in one (or more) of the following areas:
Patient Care
Unity
Research
Philanthropy
Overcoming Obstacles
Strategic Leadership
Equity
Dr. Wang cited the following areas of excellence (and a few fun facts) in his nomination of Dr. Barber:
Patient care
“One of Dr. Barber’s most impressive qualities is her unwavering dedication to her patients. She has been awarded multiple institutional awards for her bedside manner, unparalleled empathy, inspiring leadership, and outstanding clinical skills. As her fellow, I cannot count the number of patients who call overnight with questions and will end up talking about how much they love having Dr. Barber as their oncologist! She exemplifies the physician I aim to be.”
Research
“Dr. Barber’s impact on health care quality in gynecologic oncology is remarkable. She is a distinguished health services researcher and has a significant footprint in the areas of patient-reported outcomes, wearable devices, and cancer symptom science. However, the most impressive of all is her dedication to her fellows. She dedicates >1 hour each week to one-on-one meetings with me (and past fellows) to discuss research goals and professional growth. These meetings help me stay on track in terms of productivity. Her dedication is not confined to her success as she tries tirelessly to foster my (and other fellows’) growth as well. She sets a standard of excellence for research mentorship.”
