On July 27, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed the Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 Labor, Health and Human Services (Labor-HHS) and Defense appropriations bills by a bipartisan vote of 26-2 and 27-1, respectively. The full Senate is expected to vote on these bills when Congress returns from the August recess in September. In the meantime, you can find funding levels and report language of interest in SGO’s FY 2024 Appropriations Tracker. Key takeaways are also highlighted below.
FY 2024 Labor-HHS Appropriations:
- We are pleased to report that the Senate Labor-HHS report includes SGO’s report language request on “Endometrial Cancer and Obesity.”
- The Labor-HHS report also includes $47.8 billion for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is a $943 million increase over FY 2023 levels, and $7.380 billion for the National Cancer Institute (NCI), an increase of $60 million over FY 2023 levels.
FY 2024 Defense Appropriations:
- SGO’s request for a separate line item for an endometrial cancer research program within the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP) was not included in the House or Senate Defense appropriations reports. However, we were pleased to see that endometrial cancer remains in the list of conditions in the Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program, which was flat funded at $130 million.
- The Senate’s Defense appropriations report includes $15 million for the Ovarian Cancer Research Program, which is a decrease of $30 million compared to FY 2023 levels, while the House flat funded this program. We have seen this happen in previous appropriations cycles and full funding has been restored in a final appropriations bill. We hope to see this funding restored in the final bill.
SGO will be reinforcing our appropriations requests throughout August and September. We look forward to keeping SGO members updated as the FY 2024 appropriations process continues!
