Dear SGO colleagues, friends, and gynecologic oncology community,
To honor fifty-one years since the inaugural publication of Gynecologic Oncology, it was my pleasure to invite SGO members David E. Cohn, MD, MBA, past SGO President and Gynecologic Oncology Editor-in-Chief, and Susan Modesitt, MD, Gynecologic Oncology Reports Editor-in-Chief, as distinguished guest authors for Presidential Matters.
Our official international journals of the SGO are devoted to high quality clinical and investigative publications that convey some of the most promising research findings and developments regarding gynecologic cancer. With over 200 volumes and 25,000 articles in circulation, collectively, our journals have continued to thrive. Drs. Cohn and Modesitt will share the expanded breadth of resources our journals provide to better serve health care providers meet the needs of our patients.
Before closing, a friendly reminder that the journal’s editorial leadership team invites authors of abstracts accepted for oral plenary or oral focused plenary at the SGO Annual Meeting on Women’s Cancer to submit a full-length article to be featured in a dedicated special journal issue published post-meeting. Gynecologic Oncology and Gynecologic Oncology Reports are the official journals of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology and remain the premier sources for dissemination of knowledge and education for patients with or at risk for gynecologic malignancies. The journals are entirely dedicated to serving our patients and our community by publishing timely and impactful research.
Both journals have industry leading metrics in terms of time from submission to final publication.In addition, in both journals, articles are published online without waiting for an issue to be completed and key articles are immediately available to impact our practices to ensure readers get critical information on a timely basis. Gynecologic Oncology has also introduced fast track peer review for urgent communications, exceptionally novel science, previously reviewed manuscripts, and research presented as an oral plenary or focused plenary at the SGO Annual Meeting on Women’s Cancer.
Over the last few years, novel initiatives and methods for content delivery within Gynecologic Oncology have been expanding. A modernized social media approach has expanded the breadth the Journal’s engagement with our readership and the gynecologic cancer community at large. Editorials and supporting podcasts with authors and editorialists contextualize important research topics. Special issues and focused topics have recently included health equity, health disparities, and oncofertility, and have allowed for the readership to have a deeper understanding of specific aspects of the care continuum. A focus on the historical perspectives in gynecologic cancer provides the readership with an expanded foundational knowledge for today’s practice of gynecologic cancer care. Enhanced systematic reviews give readers a head start when making critical clinical decisions and the SGO’s guidelines published in the Journal provide the opinions and data from the world’s experts and give guidance on a multitude of topics.
Gynecologic Oncology Reports continues to evolve past its inception in 2011 as a repository of case reports and the editorial team’s goal has been to continue to publish and publicize timely and clinically relevant research for clinicians caring for people with and at risk for gynecologic malignancies. The journal now publishes original research studies, mini-review articles, short communications, surgical videos, and SGO journal clubs in addition to case reports and series. The editorial team created a mission to further establish the journal as a resource to foster and bolster critical peer-reviewing and writing skills in the field. In 2023, there was a new record of over 400 manuscript submissions and the journal received its first Journal Impact Factor. Usage continues to grow; in 2018, the full text usage was about 130,000 and now is over 350,000 annually. This immediate and free access is particularly helpful for those clinicians practicing in low- or middle-income countries (LMIC) or those without easy access to institutional subscriptions to journals. Gynecologic Oncology Reports is also dedicated to fostering publication skills and collaboration with the SGO 2022 annual meeting leadership resulted in our top downloaded article to date (Ridiculously Good Writing: How to Write Like a Pro and Publish Like a Boss) with over 50,000 downloads and counting. The inaugural class of editorial fellows started in July 2023 and we will issue a call for the second class at the SGO Annual Meeting in March 2024.
