The new Advanced Practice Provider Onboarding Tool is now available on SGO ConnectEd. This training guide is designed for physicians and APPs who work in clinical or inpatient settings, and is intended to assist with training plans for APPs who are new to the specialty of gynecologic oncology. This tool is free and available only to SGO members. SGO’s Advanced Practice Provider Committee, with additional input from physicians on the SGO Education Committee, developed this guide as a starting point to begin the training process. The PDF documents in the APP Onboarding tool will help APPs keep track of the skills that they are learning as a new member of the gynecologic cancer care team.

APPs utilizing this Onboarding Tool are asked to check in with the gynecologic oncologist leading their cancer care team at three-month intervals to assess their competency in a variety of common tasks, as well as duties that are specific to inpatient, outpatient and operating room care. At the end of a full year, the trainee should have acquired enough skills to be able to act as a mentor for residents and new APP members.

“The APP Onboarding Tool evolved as a result of both physicians and APPs wanting a way to orient and train APPs to this specialty,” said Karen Lyle, PA-C, who headed up this project. “Our educational training is typically not specific to gynecologic oncology and we are required to refine the skills necessary to work in gynecologic oncology on the job. This toolkit provides recommendations on the scope of practice of a gynecologic oncology APP in a concise, sensible and chronologic order to help facilitate learning.
