Katherine Tucker, MD

The SGO Coding and Reimbursement Subcommittee is pleased to announce that Katherine Tucker, MD, Gynecologic Oncologist and Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC, has been selected as the 2023-2025 Coding Fellow.

The fellowship program is designed to support early career professionals in learning why coding, reimbursement, and health care economics are vital to the successful practice of gynecologic oncology. Through active participation in coding meetings and webinars, completion of a capstone project of the fellows’ choosing, and mentorship from Subcommittee leadership, SGO Coding Fellows receive all the necessary tools to serve as future leaders and advocates in this important area.

“I look forward to this opportunity to better understand coding and reimbursement so I can help assure that my team is being reimbursed fairly for the work that is being done,” said Dr. Tucker.

In her application, Dr. Tucker shared her experience with the “painful reality” that many recent fellowship graduates feel, which is that “training does not prepare gynecologic oncologists for the business side of independent practice.” She added, “I have had to learn, and often learned by failing, much of what I know now about billing by teaching myself.”

“I am very motivated to learn more and share that knowledge with others,” said Dr. Tucker. “I hope to serve as a resource for other SGO members, especially young faculty who, like me, came into practice with limited coding training,” said Dr. Tucker.
