Dear SGO members and the gynecologic oncology community:

During Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month (GCAM), we are honored to join the global effort to raise awareness about the five gynecologic cancers and support patients, their caregivers, and our members. This month, we emphasize the importance of research, advocacy, education, and symptom recognition in promoting best outcomes in early cancer detection and treatment and how the SGO and FWC collaborate closely to lead this vital mission. We’ll also highlight several SGO members who are making a difference and who Multiply Our Impact every day.

Research: Investing in innovative research and the next generation of scientists and clinical trialists is crucial to discovering novel treatments and improving outcomes for those affected by gynecologic cancers. From our exciting collaboration with the GOG-F on the pioneering BRIDGES 2.0 Research Initiative, to the groundbreaking science presented at our educational meetings, to the millions of dollars of FWC research grants and prizes awarded to early career investigators, our commitment to scientific advancement paves the way for breakthroughs that improve and save lives. Apply by Sept 15 for an FWC research grant and/or submit a nomination by November 17 for an FWC award or prize.

Advocacy: Our SGO and FWC policy and advocacy leaders are among the leading voices championing increased federal funding for cancer research, improved access to cancer care and chemotherapy drugs, enhanced clinical resources and physician reimbursement, and comprehensive patient support services. Whether on Capitol Hill or in your local communities, your voice is vital in driving meaningful change. Check out the impactful 2024 SGO Advocacy Goals developed by the Health, Policy, and Socioeconomic Committee

Education: Knowledge is power. Educating ourselves and others about gynecologic cancers can promote early detection, informed decision-making, and better health outcomes. Let’s spread the word at our institutions, communities, within SGO and FWC programs, and on social media to empower people with the information they need to protect their health and prevent gynecologic cancer. Check out these comprehensive gynecologic cancer awareness and symptom resources – most of which are available in English, Spanish, and Mandarin – that we use routinely in our clinics.

Support the FWC and Move4Her: This Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, we also encourage you to join the Move4HER campaign. By participating and/or donating, you can help accelerate breakthroughs in cancer treatment and support the careers of early career investigators. Every step, every move, and every donation bring us closer to a world where more gynecologic cancers are prevented or cured.

Join us this month to raise awareness, support those affected, and accelerate forward in our mission to conquer gynecologic cancers.

With gratitude,

Amanda Nickles Fader, MD
SGO President
