Honolulu, HI (March 19, 2019) – Warner K. Huh, MD, began his one-year term as the 51st President of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) today at the conclusion of the Society’s 50th Annual Meeting on Women’s Cancer.

Dr. Huh will be presiding over the 2020 SGO Annual Meeting on Women’s Cancer scheduled for March 28-31, 2020 in Toronto, Canada. It will be the first SGO meeting to be held outside of the United States.

Dr. Huh is a Professor, Vice Chair and Division Director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Dr. Huh has been involved in various committees and task forces within the SGO since joining the Society in 2003, including a position as Program Chair for the 2013 SGO Annual Meeting. He has been a member of the SGO Board since 2013.

“I am deeply thankful for numerous opportunities to fully pursue my clinical, research, educational and leadership interests, and SGO has been truly central to this,” he said. “As an outspoken champion for our Society, it has always been my goal and vision to make SGO one of the premier medical subspecialty organizations nationally and internationally, and to provide the best possible services and benefits to our members.”

Dr. Huh notes that among the challenges currently facing SGO members and the Society, he plans to focus his presidency on issues such as the rapidly changing practice of gynecologic oncology including surgery and novel therapies, clinical trial mentorship, subspecialty awareness, alternative payment models, and the role of gynecologic oncologists in benign gynecologic surgery.

In addition to these initiatives, Dr. Huh explained that SGO’s recent changes to the membership categories will help expand the Society’s international membership. “As part of being a more inclusive Society, we have reduced perceived barriers to membership—such as cost—especially for the international community. Different regions of the world might face health care disparities that we can address with input from a diverse group of members.”

Dr. Huh received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, followed by a residency at the New England Medical Center (now Tufts Medical Center) in Boston MA, and a fellowship at UAB.
