Dr. Chalas voted president-elect of ACOG
Eva Chalas, MD
On May 5 the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) announced the election of Eva Chalas, MD, as president-elect. Dr. Chalas has served as the SGO Organizational Liaison for the ACOG Executive Board, Chair Elect for the Foundation of Women’s Cancer, and was the SGO Secretary-Treasurer from 2009 to 2012, in addition to serving on numerous SGO committees since 1994.
Dr. Chalas is a professor and vice-chair of obstetrics and gynecology at NYU Long Island School of Medicine. She holds the administrative position of Physician Director at the Center for Cancer Care and as NSQIP Surgeon Co-Champion at NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, NY.
She received her Medical Degree and completed her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stony Brook School of Medicine. She completed a subspecialty fellowship training in Gynecologic Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, where she also was the American Cancer Society Fellow.
Dr. Chalas previously served ACOG as Chair of District II and Chair of the Council of District Chairs, among other positions. She also was a two-term Governor to the American College of Surgeons.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to advocate for our members and the women we serve, and am committed to a successful tenure,” Dr. Chalas said. “The last gynecologic oncologist, on whom this honor was bestowed was Vicki L. Seltzer, MD, ACOG President 1997-1998. Dr. Seltzer has been one of my many mentors, some of whom included Drs. Martin Stone, William J. Mann, Carolyn Runowicz, Beth Karlan, Daniel Clarke-Pearson, Barbara Goff and Jimmy Orr.
“Over the past thirty years of volunteer service on SGO, American College of Surgeons and ACOG committees, I have been fortunate to have had the support of all my partners. This work provided me with incredible opportunities to form professional friendships, which I would like to leverage along with the ACOG leadership position to promote close collaboration between these organizations and to significantly enhance medical education, research and clinical care of all women.”

Several members of SGO, including 2018-2019 SGO President Carol Brown, MD, FACOG, FACS, were among over 300 surgeons, residents, and medical students at the 29th Annual Meeting of the Society of Black Academic Surgeons (SBAS) in New York City on April 25 -27, hosted by the Weill-Cornell Medicine Department of Surgery and New York Presbyterian. SBAS was founded in 1989 with a mission to improve health, advance science, and foster academic careers of African American and other underrepresented minority surgeons. The annual scientific meeting provides opportunities for surgeons of all backgrounds to participate in the grant writing workshop, mentoring sessions, and scientific forum. Registration open for SGO Allied Health Professionals Meeting
Registration and housing are open for the SGO Allied Health Professionals Meeting, to be held Oct. 18-20, 2019, at the Hilton Rosemont near Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. The Allied Health Professionals Meeting is targeted towards nurse practitioners, registered nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists and other women’s cancer care team members who are interested in learning more about current treatment and scientific challenges that advanced practice practitioners encounter when treating patients with gynecologic cancers. New SGO Southeast Regional Meeting opens registration and housing
SGO is offering a new Southeast Regional Meeting on Sept. 19-21, 2019, in Birmingham, AL. Registration and discounted housing rates are now available for this event. Building upon the SGO Annual Meeting on Women’s Cancer in March 2019, this new conference will help members and attendees distill new science, and understand how best to incorporate new knowledge into their clinical practice. This meeting will also fulfill the need for a regional meeting in the Southeast to provide a forum for research presentation, education, and mentoring to residents and fellows, as well as networking opportunities. Abstract submission opens Sunday, May 26 and closes on Friday, July 26.

Select recordings from the SGO 2019 Annual Meeting on Women’s Cancer are now available and free to all attendees (members and non-members) as well as all SGO members regardless of whether or not they attended the 50th annual meeting. SGO members wishing to take advantage of this opportunity are asked to log into SGO ConnectEd and register for the 2019 SGO Annual Meeting course. Being a current SGO member ensures that the selections are free.
