The Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) and the Coding and Reimbursement Subcommittee are pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2024-2026 SGO Coding Fellowship. Coding, reimbursement, and healthcare economics are vital to the successful practice of gynecologic oncology. SGO needs knowledgeable members to participate in a range of activities from educating members to working with other national organizations, as well as Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

The goal of this two-year program is to nurture and educate physicians on coding and health economics issues, providing the fellow with the tools necessary to advocate on the national level, develop educational tools for our membership, and take a leadership role in this vital area in the future. We invite you to consider submitting your application for this unique opportunity. Full membership on the Coding and Reimbursement Subcommittee will be offered upon successful completion of the fellowship.

Who is eligible to apply for the SGO Coding Fellowship?

ยท Early Career members and Fellows-in-Training with an interest in coding, billing and practice management are encouraged to apply.

What are the expected fellowship activities?

The coding fellow will work with members of the Coding and Reimbursement Subcommittee of the Health Policy and Socioeconomic Committee (HPSE). Examples of expected activities include:

  • Educational platform development such as establishment of coding webinars
  • Practice management resource development updates to ICD-10 or CPT coding references
  • National advocacy efforts to develop new codes through CMS
  • Investigations resulting in poster/oral presentation at The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) or SGO

What are the additional expectations of the coding fellow?

  • The estimated time commitment for a coding fellow is 5-10 hours/month for projects and activities, and 5-6 days/year away from practice for the following meetings:
    • Attend one (1) ACOG Committee on Health Economics & Coding (CHEC) meeting at ACOG Headquarters in July or December
    • Attend the CPT editorial and American Medical Association RVS Update Committee (AMA RUC) meetings as needed
    • Attend the SGO Coding Course at the SGO Annual Meeting and assist with course preparation and presentations
    • Attend SGO Coding Webinars and assist with webinar preparation and presentation

What is the application process?

  • Complete the online application. Applications must be submitted by Oct. 31, 2023.
  • Attestation by Program Director or Chair is required, confirming support for the applicant to commit the time required for participation.
  • Fellowship selection will be performed by the Coding and Reimbursement Subcommittee leadership team.

The SGO Coding Fellowship recipient will be announced in November 2023 and will receive a complimentary registration to attend the SGO Coding Course in 2024.
