Communications Manager
Kayla Nixon’s career in public health is rooted in her background in elementary education and shaped by her personal journey as a uterine cancer survivor. Holding both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Elementary Education (Pre-K-6) from Old Dominion University (ODU), Kayla spent several years as an elementary school teacher. This experience honed her ability to connect with and communicate effectively with diverse audiences, a skill that has proven invaluable in her current role.
Diagnosed with uterine cancer at age 25, Kayla’s lived experience fuels her commitment to advocating for gynecologic oncology and women’s cancers. She is passionate about creating health communication strategies and content that promotes health equity, inclusivity, and cultural competence.
Kayla believes effective communication is about making powerful connections and that words are the cornerstone of communication; the right combination of words can influence belief and change that ultimately allows for greater impact.
When not working, Kayla enjoys spending quality time with family, traveling, gardening, and live and recorded music.
