Advocacy Turned into Action: NIH Consensus Conference on Women’s Health Research

On Oct. 20, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH), in conjunction with the Advisory Committee on Research on Women’s Health (ACRWH) is holding a virtual conference open to the public to address issues relevant to gynecologic oncology including research gaps in women’s health and stagnant cervical cancer survival rates.

The event, “Advancing NIH Research on the Health of Women: A 2021 Conference,” will be held Oct. 20 at 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. CT | 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. ET. The key topics to be discussed, as identified by Congress, are (1) clinical practices related to rising maternal morbidity and mortality rates; (2) increasing rates of chronic debilitating conditions in women; and (3) stagnant cervical cancer survival rates.

Earlier this summer, SGO was one of several health care professional societies invited to provide comments identifying research gaps and pitfalls in clinical practice. SGO’s comment letter, developed jointly by SGO’s Health Policy and Socioeconomic (HPSE) subcommittees and the GOG Foundation, along with comments submitted by individual SGO members, helped shape the conference agenda and NIH’s accompanying report to Congress.
