Dr. Diane Yamada Begins Tenure as 53rd President of Society of Gynecologic Oncology

(MARCH 25, 2021) At the conclusion of the Business Meeting during the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) Virtual Annual Meeting on Women’s Cancer on March 20, Diane Yamada, MD, officially began her one-year term as the 53rd president of SGO, a professional organization dedicated to advancing the prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of gynecologic cancers.

An SGO Board member since 2012 and a Society member since 2000, Dr. Yamada has volunteered on numerous SGO committees over the past 20 years, serving as chair of the SGO Marketing and Communications Committee, a member of the Program Committee for the 2006 and 2014 SGO Annual Meetings, and co-chair of the Program Committee for the SGO Annual Meeting in 2019.

In collaboration with the SGO Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer Pierre Désy, MPH, CAE, Dr. Yamada has been working on the 2021-2023 Strategic Plan for SGO. In addition to establishing goals to advance the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic cancers, the new strategic plan will promote standards of excellence, foster greater diversity, equity, inclusion and accountability within the Society and the larger healthcare community to improve health outcomes for all patients while supporting the membership through operational excellence, innovation, engagement and efficiency.

The SGO has been my professional home since I was a fellow. I am incredibly proud of how our members, volunteer leaders and SGO staff have faced the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and events of the past year with introspection, foresight and resilience,” said Dr. Yamada. “I believe the society is at an inflection point and I look forward to serving the membership and our patients as we work toward our vision of a world without gynecologic cancers.”

Dr. Yamada has also been deeply involved in the development of the SGO Leadership Institute for the Society’s members, in partnership with the Foundation for Women’s Cancer (FWC), the official foundation of SGO.

“As an entity, the Leadership Institute will help the SGO deliver on some of the key tenets of our strategic plan—diversification of our volunteer leadership and the development of a portfolio of products and services that enhances the professional development, connectivity and mentorship of our members,” said Dr. Yamada.

Dr. Yamada is the Joseph Bolivar DeLee Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Chief of the Section of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Chicago. She received her medical education at the David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California Los Angeles, completed her internship and residency at Harbor- UCLA Medical Center and her gynecologic oncology fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the University of California, Irvine.
